On 21 July 2022, John West started a recall of cans of John West Sardines in Olive Oil 120g and Boneless Sardines in Sunflower Oil 95g sold through Morrisons, Waitrose, Tesco, Ocado, Amazon, EH Booth, James Hall, Century Park, Co-operative and James Wilson stores.

Based on our latest findings an extremely small number of cans of our Sardines in Olive Oil 120g and Boneless Sardines in Sunflower Oil 95g have potentially suffered a microscopic packaging defect. As a result, the product would no longer be sterile which could allow the contents inside to become unfit to eat.

The safety of our products and the wellbeing of consumers is our highest priority. Therefore, as a precaution, we have recalled all cans from the batches mentioned below.

The affected cans have a batch code of 109, 110, 111, 112 and 113 (found on the side of the can) in conjunction with a ‘best before’ date of December 2026.

Whilst further tests are ongoing to confirm the exact nature of the potential packaging defect, we are conducting even more rigid can inspections and putting even more stringent checks in place with all our packaging.

In line with guidance from the Food Standards Agency, we have supplied the relevant retailers with posters for all of their stores to alert shoppers to the relevant products. Anyone who has purchased a Sardines product with one of the affected batch codes should return the product to the store where they bought it from for a full refund. Customer Service is available at consumercontact@john-west.com to answer any questions. Further contact details are also available below.

We apologise to all our shoppers for any inconvenience or concern this causes.
