Research Methodology
  • A quantitative Central Location Test of 100 typical consumers was carried out in the Wirral area (see below recruitment criteria)
  • The research was conducted by an independent 3rd party research agency, Wirral Sensory Services
  • Respondents were shown unbranded product
  • Testing was carried out semi-monadic (sequential) and in a random order
  • Respondents were asked to score the products for a number of attributes on an 11-point hedonic scale, as well as noting down any specific likes and dislikes
  • They were also asked to score the products on a 5-point diagnostic scale against certain parameters
  • Preference and purchase intent were also measured
  • 9 standard tuna chunk in spring water products were tested: John West EcoTwist, John West 145g tuna, and a representative sample of other branded and retailer labelled tuna chunk in spring water products
Sample Size and Demographic Profile A sample of 100 respondents, who were all regular consumers of tinned tuna with a general mix of age, gender and socio-economic demographics
Research Date 21st August 2023, repeated again in December 2025 and January 2026
Data Outputs
  • The standard sensory attributes were assessed in a blind session
  • Results included:
    • 1st Place for overall quality — John West Eco Twist Tuna Chunks in Springwater scored 34.96 vs the next product at 34.46
    • 1st Place for taste scoring 7.36/10 vs the next product at 7.05/10
  • Results are based on full sample size and aligned to the demographic profile
