The reason why you hear so much about the essential nutrient Omega-3 is because you can only get it from the food you eat - the body cannot manufacture it for itself. It is found in relatively few foods, so many people simply don't get enough. Canned fish like Salmon, Sardines and Mackerel are naturally high in Omega-3, specifically "very long carbon chain omega-3s called EPA and DHA". These are the most valuable types of Omega-3.
So what do they do?
Scientific evidence supports the role of long-chain Omega-3 EPA and DHA, in the healthy development and function of the brain, eye and heart. There is also a belief they could boost your immune system, improve the appearance of your hair and skin, increase flexibility and circulation - even enhance your memory! Fish oils contain the specific long-chain omega 3 fatty acids that offer the highest level of health benefits. Omega 3 naturally occurs in other food sources too, such as soya, flax seeds, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds and oils, walnuts and leafy green veg. But these foods contain the short-chain omega 3 fatty acids, which don't have quite as many health benefits as the long-chain variety. Foods with added omega 3, such as spreads, milk and even bread, are now widely available too. However, often this Omega 3 comes from Plant sources and is not as beneficial as long chain Omega 3 that is naturally found in oily fish.
