As the largest and best-known supplier of canned fish in the UK, John West takes its responsibility to the marine environment extremely seriously. Our selection procedure in appointing suppliers is rigorous and our policy dictates that we only purchase fish which is caught with no harm to the marine environment. We are committed to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and we fully support the regional fisheries management regimes espoused by it.
As a major purchaser of fish and fish products it is naturally of vital importance that we adopt a sustainable approach to everything we do so that fish stocks are maintained and we work with various specialists to ensure we are always aware of any issues which arise over conservation and fish stocks.
All the Tuna used by John West is caught by either purse seining (in the Atlantic, Western Pacific and Indian Oceans), or pole and line (in the Atlantic). In addition, all our activities are monitored by the Earth Island Institute (EII), a non-governmental organisation based in the USA, to ensure that all the Tuna in our canneries is dolphin safe and caught by the approved methods. Our Tuna suppliers comply fully with all international regulations, and fishing and stock management are covered by the appropriate Fishing Regional Organisations.
All the Salmon used in our canned products is sourced from the USA and Canada where methods of sustainable fishing are tightly controlled by the governments in each country. All our canned Salmon comes from reputable suppliers and is sourced from the wild.
Across all the products in our range we continue to work with our suppliers, Governments, the EU and NGOs to maintain and improve on all environmental aspects of the food supply chain.
